Brain Wilson: A man with an honest opinion!

Brain Wilson: A man with an honest opinion!
Written By: Jayi Kemp

Pardon me for being late in the whole “Brain Wilson Saga thing”, but I was doing something more productive with my time other then lending my opinion in this hoopla, but since this seems to be the hot topic today, why not?

Brain Wilson in my opinion said nothing wrong whatsoever, in fact, I agree with his analogy completely. With former President Bush’s No Child Left Behind Act, teaching has become less about teaching and more about feeding, or teaching children to retain certain information then introducing new concepts, inventive thinking, and entrepreneurship.

Brain Wilsons analogy made have struck people a little funny, but that was probably because of the Blade (www.ToledoBlade.com) snippet that they showcase people. Anytime you quote a banana and monkey in a sentence, people are only going to insinuate that you are making a racist remark gear towards African – Americans.

But in this case Brain Wilson was not, his analogy about the monkey and the banana was informing listeners that TPS only teaches students tricks for test taking and not enough critical thinking, but in a dramatic way, that obviously did its job and grab the listener’s attention.

Think about it, when a (if) child enters college, the learning curriculum and the whole concept about education is completely different then what most children learn in high school. High school is suppose to be the gateway to college, it is suppose to encourage its students to move forth with college and make something more out of themselves then what they once thought.

However, with the No Child Left Behind Act, education has been stripped down, and teaching has almost become more about focusing on passing state issue testing for funding then about the joy in learning! Brain Wilson did no wrong in my opinion with what he said; did he strike some nerves, he sure did, but I’m sure the only people who were really bothered by what he said was either those who did not listen to his show and read the exert out of the Blade or those who actually believe in the No Child Left Behind Act, but who am I, this is only my opinion!
