Eating Humble Pie: Jayi Kemp The B Photographer?

Assisting my uncle at Mr. and Mrs. Henry's wedding

Ever since I started snapping with my shutter, I have always been the lead photographer. Never once have I done an event where I was not the photographer in charge, but recently that changed.

Earlier this month I was presented with an oppurtunity to shoot a wedding with my Uncle as his assitant. And after weighing over the offer for a little bit, I happily accepted the chance to work with a professional who I felt I could learn from.

So on June 14th of this year, I walked into the Tabernacle of Life church as the assistant and not the lead photographer for the first time ever and guess what...? I had a blast being his assitant.

Being in that sancuturay and assisting my Uncle in directing the wedding parties for their photos humbled me. At times I have laughed at the notion of having a secondary camera at an event with me, but after that Saturday, I realized how vital it can be to have the "right" assistant with you.

Assitant photographers can make or break you, they can be everything that I was to my Uncle that Saturday, or they can be unprofessional and a distraction at an event. Either or I see the value of trying to work with one again, an who knows, if I could be the assistant for another photographer, maybe someone with the same skill set as I, might want to be my assistant someday, until the next time ya'll, this is Jayi Kemp signing off :)
